Confidence, Trust... Skill

TOP SLING is a specialized helicopter external cargo (HESLO) training program for rated helicopter pilots designed to develop precision, confidence, and real-world operational capability in vertical reference flying.

Training is led by Felix Christians, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) with over 10,000 flight hours, including 3,500+ hours in external cargo / HESLO operations across construction, firefighting, and complex aerial work environments.

The program follows the core framework of the European HESLO standard (Levels 1–4), progressing pilots from basic short-line operations (≤20m) to advanced long-line precision work and complex load handling, consistent with internationally recognized guidance

Course Structure

  • Two Phase program with a total of 20-hours of  flight training + 10 hours ground training

  • Conducted on the Robinson R44 or R66

  • Alternatively you can bring your own aircraft, we can train on: Bell 206 series Airbus AS350 series Bell medium series & Hughes 500 series

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum: PPL(H)

  • For commercial application: CPL(H) recommended

  • Experience requirements:

    • < 300 hours total time: minimum 50 hours on R44 or R66

    • ≥ 300 hours total time: must hold R44 or R66 endorsement

  • Should meet baseline experience expectations aligned with HESLO progression:

    • Minimum 10 hours on helicopter type prior to training

Ground & Operational Training

  • 10 hours of structured ground school, including:

    • HESLO theory, risk management, and human factors

    • Equipment, hooks, and long-line configurations

    • Load rigging principles and safety procedures

    • Communication and coordination with ground crew

  • Integrated Load Master / Ground Crew training:

    • Hand signals and communication protocols

    • Safe load preparation and rigging

    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for external load operations

Certification & Outcome

  • Graduates receive a TOP SLING Certificate of Completion

  • Includes an instructor recommendation confirming that the pilot’s skills meet the operational intent of HESLO standards

  • Training prepares pilots for global external load operations, including construction, utility, firefighting, and specialized aerial work
